Challenge: Create a new publishing venture with five issues.
Solution: Penrose, The Journal brings together the highlights from the Penrose Annual to a contemporary audience of graphic designers.
The articles are in chronological order throughout the journal but are selected from annuals of different years, giving a broader perspective of topics and techniques such as photography, printing methods and typography. The journal is divided into 75% general articles and 20% technical articles and creative advertisements from a particular annual.
Penrose uses different paper stocks in its internal spreads to pay homage to the handmade element of the original annual. The covers are traditional printing colours to reflect its content and history. However, the paper has a slight sparkle to reflect the hidden gem quality – the idea that we could miss the important design lessons from the past.
